Is the laser soldering machine (laser soft soldering machine) the same as the laser welding machine? Why are the names so similar? Are they interchangeable?
Of course not, the laser welding machine and the laser soldering machine are only similar in name. In terms of working principle, applicable materials, and application industries, they actually have little connection and are two completely independent devices.
Working principles of laser soldering machine and laser welding machine
The laser welding machine is a precise welding method that uses a high-energy density laser beam as a heat source. It is divided into thermal conduction welding and laser deep fusion welding. The surface heat of the workpiece diffuses inward through heat conduction. By controlling the width, energy, peak power, and repetition frequency of the laser pulses, the workpiece is melted, forming a specific molten pool. It is an important aspect of laser material processing applications and mainly targets welding of thin-walled materials and precision parts, achieving spot welding, butt welding, lap welding, and seal welding, etc.
The main feature of laser soldering is that it uses the high energy density of the laser to complete the soldering process in local or small areas. The key to optical soldering is to control the laser power distribution reasonably. Although both use laser beams as heat sources, there are still differences in the process.
Laser soldering (laser soft soldering) belongs to a type of laser processing. It uses a laser as a heating source to radiate the lead (or leadless device connection pad) and transfer heat to the substrate through the special soldering material for laser soft soldering (laser solder paste/wire or pre-made solder panels). When the temperature reaches the melting point of the solder, the solder melts, and the substrate and the lead are wetted by the solder, thus forming a solder joint.

Laser soldering machines are mainly used in precision processing in the electronics industry, such as spot welding of PCB connection boards, FPC, electronic connectors, thermal elements, etc., and are also suitable for the microelectronics field, such as welding of extremely thin coaxial lines and terminals, welding of USB flat cables, welding of flexible circuit boards FPC or rigid circuit PCB boards, high-precision LCD screen LCD, TFT welding, and high-frequency transmission lines.
The applicable welding materials for laser welding machines include mold steel, carbon steel, alloy steel, stainless steel, copper and copper alloys, aluminum and aluminum alloys, plastics, etc.
